Claudia Wegener - AIR LINES - downloaded

Presents 4 tracks of sound works which have sourced their material and subject matter from the streets: downloaded, in this case, in London. Everyone and everything out there in the streets is on air: busy transmitting. Each of the following artists’ sound projects position a very particular receiver on street level: recording, transcribing, collecting at certain time and place bits of street air. The bits become re-assemble, air beats on a time line, remixed and, once again, aired. A recommended mode of listening to AIR LINES: window-seat on transatlantic flight...

London sound study
by Boyle Family is an audio variation of journey to the surface of the earth a project begun in 1964. In October 2002, Boyle Family asked visitors to Construction Art Space in London to throw darts at an unseen target: a mixed-up A-Z map of Greater London. Seventy-nine sites were pin-pointed by the darts and each visitor was also asked to choose a random time - one of the minutes of the day. Boyle Family went to each site and recorded one minute of its sound at the given time. The recordings were made during February and March 2003. The tracks sampled here were determined using random selection techniques.

Magnetic migration
is an on-going project by Zoë Irvine. During the exhibition project Interference: Public Sound in 2003, collection envelopes were distributed in public places inviting people to send in any fragments of audio tape they found in the street and requesting the exact date, location, and finder of the tape be written on the reverse. Magnetic Migration Music is the result of this collection process, mapping the discarded fragments of audiotape, re-spooling them and creating different mixes of the found sound

24 hrs
is an on-going project of writing in the streets of cities by claudia wegener. Descriptions in long-hand follow the comings and goings of people. Hand-written notes are edited to printed texts, texts are recited and recorded. Words become “movies “ in the imagination of a listener. ‘100 jingles’ (51° NORTH 0° WEST: DEC.02 - DEC.04) is based on footage from London now circling on the night-loop of the radio station Resonance104.4fm - being thrown up on air at random.

lament for the black sounds
is one of an ongoing series of recordings by Juan Cruz in which he attempts to sound out, echo and revivify the deeply mournful voice of Manuel Torre. The artist’s voice becomes the receiver of a short-circuit ‘aural’ transmission inadvertently airing a lost lament. Michael Phillipson has described one of the recordings as an “...inchoate sounding, the not-quite heard, which both summons him but endlessly fades to nothing in the face of his searching call.”

good morning camberwell !
by the London based artists group foreign investment is a one-day live broadcast of the favourite tunes of residents, locals and passers-by of Camberwell Church Street aired during the exhibition YESVEMBER in November 2004. foreign investment transformed the House Gallery in Camberwell in South East London into one large amplifier: relaying 100 personal number 1-s directly from the street into the traffic soundscape outside the shop window. This track is a 10’’ mix down of one day audio footage.
